2013 was filled with lots of artist support for WhyHunger. From touring to site visits to concert events and Homemade Jams, our artist partners continued to help spread the word about our work and raise much needed funds on WhyHunger’s behalf. Here’s a short list of the amazing moments that happened in 2013.
1. Homemade Jams Launched!
In June we proudly launched Homemade Jams: 100 House Concerts to End Hunger. The campaign has been a great success with a wide variety of house concerts happening in communities across the country. Looking forward to getting closer to our goal of 100 house concerts!
2. John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes
In November, we launched our new groundbreaking interactive album app “John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes.” Listen to exclusive dialogue between John and Yoko Ono during their collaboration on Double Fantasy and enjoy excerpts from John’s demo tapes recorded in Bermuda. 3. Michael McDonald and WhyHunger Partner to End Hunger
Michael McDonald continued to show his support of WhyHunger by donating tickets with meet & greets with proceeds going to WhyHunger. The campaign was a big success. Many thanks to Michael and his fans for their support!
4. “Imagine There’s No Hunger” Artist Ambassador Lissie Performs in New York City
It was an honor to have Lissie as an Artist Ambassador for the 2013 “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign. Lissie brought the message of the Imagine campaign to her fans at her concert at Webster Hall, inviting them to donate food items and funds to WhyHunger’s grassroots partner, New York Common Pantry, and take photos in front of our “Imagine There’s No Hunger” step and repeat.
5. Blurred Vision Volunteer at New York Common Pantry
We love when our artist partners lend their talents to our grassroots partners and the guys in Blurred Vision did just that! The band, their family and some WhyHunger staff spent a morning at New York Common Pantry in which they cooked enough vegetables to serve over 300 soup kitchen clients! 6. AAH&P Welcomes Martha Redbone to the Program
Singer, songwriter, activist, motivator – all of these words describe Martha Redbone. We were so excited to add her to our list of AAH&P members. She’s already done amazing work on the road educating her fans about WhyHunger’s work. If you haven’t checked out her music we highly recommend you do so.
7. The Nutopians Pay Tribute to Yoko Ono Lennon at WhyHunger Dinner
It was truly a privilege to be able to honor Yoko Ono Lennon at the 2013 WhyHunger Chapin Awards dinner. What made it an even more magical evening was the musical tribute that AAH&P members, The Nutopians paid to Yoko. Their performance was inspiring and everyone in attendance was blown away. 8. WhyHunger at SXSW
We headed off to Austin, TX for the 2013 SXSW Music Festival where our Director of AAH&P spoke on a panel, “Raise Your Fists: Music Meets Activism” along with other industry experts. Re-live some of the highlights here.
9. The Cotton Patch Gospel and Phil Kaufmann Make Their Way to New York
On April 21 Phil Kaufmann brought his one-man version of The Cotton Patch Gospel to Brooklyn, NY. The show was excellent and all in attendance had a great time. Read more about the event.
10. WhyHunger On Site at the CBGB Festival in Times Square
What’s better than spending a gorgeous Saturday in Times Square listening to awesome music and meeting new people? Not much! That’s what WhyHunger was able to do as we were on site during the CBGB Music Festival. Check out some photo highlights from our day.
11. Davy Knowles Performs at WhyHunger’s Office
WhyHunger staff was lucky to spend an afternoon hanging out with Davy Knowles and listening to his impressive guitar playing. Davy played a few songs and talked about his passion for music and for doing good. Thanks Davy for a great performance!
12. Emily Kinney and WhyHunger Partner for #GivingTuesday
On December 3, WhyHunger and Emily Kinney participated in the first ever #GivingTuesday Google+ Hang-Out-A-Thon. Emily performed a few songs from the Google offices in NYC and participated in a Q&A with WhyHunger’s Director of Programs and Director of AAH&P. Check out one of the songs Emily performed that day.
13. Mayday and Yoko Ono Lennon Celebrate the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” Campaign in Tokyo
On December 5, Yoko Ono Lennon, international musical superstars, Mayday, WhyHunger’s Director of Marketing & Fundraising and Hard Rock staff gathered with fans for an evening of music and celebrations to support the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign at the Hard Rock Cafe in Tokyo. It was an inspiring evening and we look forward to Imagine 2014!
