Market Makeovers: Greening the Food Desert

An extensive online toolkit walks readers through the process of bringing healthier food choices to small corner stores.

Market Makeovers is a project resulting from a collaboration between the South L.A. Healthy Eating Active Communities (HEAC) Initiative and Public Matters, an organization that creates strategies for civic engagement. The website was created as a youth engagement and leadership development project, and it now houses dozens of resources to learn how to bring healthier food choices to food deserts.

The toolkit walks readers step-by-step through the process of working with small convenience stores to source healthier foods, based on case studies in South Los Angeles. The resource database is comprehensive in scope, including: planning and community mapping, building partnerships and getting funding, marketing and promotion, policy and advocacy, and continued support after project completion.
