Want to help end hunger but don’t know where to start? Here are 4 ways you can take action today.
1. Build local community
- Join a community garden: Meet neighbors and help with garden duties. Find one near you through the American Community Gardening Association.
- Sign up for a Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) box: Support local, sustainable farmers and get fresh produce delivered weekly. Find one on LocalHarvest.org
- Volunteer at a food bank: They need help year-round, not just during holidays. You can find food pantries and orgs near you through WhyHunger’s Find Food tool: WhyHunger.org/find-food
- Support mutual aid networks: Connect with grassroots groups providing direct community support.
2. Advocate
- Find your Congressional, state, and local representatives at: usa.gov/elected-officials
- Ask your Congressional representatives to fight for the repeal of recent massive cuts to SNAP—an effective anti-hunger, anti-poverty program.
- Ask your state and local representatives to expand food access programs in response to federal funding cuts. Let them know that you believe nutritious food is a human right for ALL.
3. Stay Informed
Here are 3 resources for learning about food policy news, anti-hunger programs, and movements for food justice:
- The WhyHunger newsletter: Sign up here.
- Civil Eats Policy Tracker: An independent news site covering latest policy news and analysis. Follow at: @civileats
- HEAL Food Alliance: A multi-sector, multi-racial coalition working to transform our food and farm systems. Follow at: @healfoodalliance
4. Donate to the Hungerthon campaign.
WhyHunger’s Hungerthon campaign raises funds to meet the moment.
- Your donation helps us connect millions of people in crisis to food through the WhyHunger Hotline and Find Food tools.
- It also supports long-term solutions to hunger, including sustainable local farming, social movements, and community-led food programs like co-ops and urban farms.
