The National Hunger Clearinghouse (NHC) collects, develops and distributes information and resources to help build the capacity of emergency food providers (EFPs) to address the immediate needs of struggling families and individuals while promoting resilience and access to healthy food.

The WhyHunger Hotline, 1-800-5-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (1-877-842-6273), is a nationwide hotline that provides information to connect individuals in need to emergency food in their communities, government assistance programs, and various social services. The WhyHunger Database, located at whyhunger.org/findfood, is the nation’s only centralized database of organizations working on food, nutrition, agriculture, hunger and poverty issues. The WhyHunger Database makes it easy for organizations and individuals in need to learn about and connect with other agencies, programs and coalitions. Nourish Change is a monthly e-newsletter that facilitates the exchange of information, resources and ideas among emergency food providers. The newsletter spotlights innovative work of emergency food providers across the country and often contains information on new resources, conferences, policy initiatives and funding opportunities. WhyHunger’s Nourishing Connections program connects emergency food providers to resources and to like-minded organizations around the country providing healthy food and nutrition education. Through Nourishing Connections, food pantry staff and volunteers can access training and technical assistance around sourcing healthy foods, be connected with coaches, and access peer to peer mentorships. Cooking Up Community: Nutrition Education in Emergency Food Programs (2012) gathers resources and information about innovative nutrition education programming by organizations around the country. These models can serve as examples and inspiration to create new programming or as sources for collaboration and ideas.

Building The Bridge: Linking Food Banking and Community Food Security (2005) aims to foster greater understanding among food banks of the community food security approach and a greater understanding among the community food security movement.

Serving Up Justice: How to Design an Emergency Feeding Program (2006) is a resource guide for those looking to establish or improve a food pantry, soup kitchen or other emergency feeding programs.

Filling Our Bowls: A Grassroots Guide to Fundraising (2007), an addendum to Serving Up Justice, speaks to all levels of fundraising savvy and covers a wide range of funding options from in-kind donations to corporate, government and foundation grants.

Artists Against Hunger & Poverty is WhyHunger’s program that partners with artists, the music community and the music industry to raise awareness and funds for emergency food providers and community-based organizations working to end hunger and poverty.

The Food Security Learning Center offers quick and easy access to hundreds of articles, videos, images and resources on key topics related to hunger and community food security such as race and the food system, food sovereignty and workers in the food system.
