Sunday, Aug. 29 is the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and WhyHunger urges everyone to remember the devastation it caused to the people who live on the Gulf Coast. The recent BP oil spill has made the living conditions in the area even more dire.

Recently, President Obama has appointed Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to develop a Gulf Coast Recovery plan. Five years after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit the region,  more than 100 groups have released a blueprint for the long term recovery from Katrina, Rita, and the BP oil spill, based in community-based solutions to the ongoing crises.

This weekend, attend a screening of 2009 Harry Chapin Media Award winner “Trouble the Water” or watch it on the National Geographic channel on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 9 pm (est). The film follows Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, who turns the video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in New Orleans  As the hurricane rages, Kim and her husband Scott continue to film their harrowing retreat to higher ground, and the dramatic rescues of friends and neighbors.
