For decades, WhyHunger has worked to connect people across the country with free, nutritious food through our national Find Food Database, Hotline, and Texting service. We’re looking for volunteers to help us keep this important resource up to date and accessible. Whether you prefer to help from home or in person, there are plenty of ways to get involved and make a difference in your community! Reach out to become a vital part of this effort.
Support with Research and Database Updates
What you’ll do:
- Keep the Map Updated
Call local food distribution points to confirm their hours and operations. Use our digital system to update the map with the latest info.
- Find New Emergency Food Sites
Conduct phone or online research to identify new food distribution locations and add them to the Find Food Database. - Maintain and Update the Database
Ensure emergency food site information stays accurate and current by reviewing and updating details periodically.
Volunteer as a Hunger Hotline Advocate
We’re looking for compassionate volunteers to answer calls and help connect people to food and resources in their community.
What you’ll do:
- Answer calls and voicemails, helping people locate food and resources in their communities.
- Use WhyHunger’s “Find Food” database and other tools to guide callers.
- Document each call to ensure we’re capturing every story and meeting immediate needs.

Help Promote the WhyHunger Hotline
Get people connected to healthy food by posting and sharing our outreach materials.
What you’ll do:
- Print flyers for local community spaces (libraries, schools, clinics)
- Spread the word about this resource via social media, newsletters, and websites

In-Person Volunteer Opportunities
Prefer to help on the ground? Use the Find Food Database to locate food banks and pantries near you, then reach out to ask how you can assist.
Here are just a few ways you can help:
- Pack or Distribute Food – Volunteer at food banks or pantries.
- Deliver Food – Use your vehicle to bring food to those without access to local sites.
- Support Community Gardens – Help grow fresh produce for those in need.
