Thanks to the support of the Artist Against Hunger & Poverty family in 2011 we gained a lot of momentum to kick off the new year and, with hunger on the rise, renewed reason to continue our fight against hunger and poverty. From beginning to end, you helped us achieve record-breaking success with our Imagine There’s No Hunger and Hungerthon campaigns. You’ve witnessed the launch of our new website and the revamped AAH&P Newsletter. Let’s take a retrospective tour of last year’s accomplishments while we get inspired for new action in 2012.
2011 Highlights:
JANUARY. We celebrated the successes of 2010 and looked forward to what was on the horizon in 2011 such as continuing our work with Papa Roach, Limelight, Hard Rock International and more.
FEBRUARY. moe. donated 2 tickets to be auctioned off for an unbelievable night of music when they performed at Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble. The lucky winners were treated to quite the evening out at this sold out show!
MARCH. This month, we called upon all our creative supporters to submit poems about WhyHunger and our work. Once again, here’s the winning poem written by Rosemary Gushue.
They saw a need, and without hesitation
The void to fill, to feed a nation
Soon trying to help the world, an order tall
So no one is hungry, when in bed they fall
WhyHunger? a question still being sought
Still everyday, the good battle fought
APRIL. Bleu kicked off his partnership with WhyHunger by volunteering with fans at the Somerville Food Pantry in Massachusetts.
MAY. The annual WhyHunger dinner musical honoree was announced and we were all excited to honor musician, actor and activist, Rubén Blades.
JUNE. Director of AAH&P, Hillary, joined in the celebration of Hard Rock’s 40th Birthday at Hard Rock Calling in London!
JULY. This month, we remembered our founder, Harry Chapin, through a video awareness campaign to honor the 30th anniversary of his passing and his lifelong goal to fight hunger. We welcomed new AAH&P members Burlap to Cashmere and Mojo B.
AUGUST. We celebrated the summer with an Intern Appreciation Day featuring AAH&P members, MojoB and Tony Lightman, and our WhyHunger interns. Our team happily volunteered at the Yorkville Common Pantry in New York City, packing and distributing pantry bags.
SEPTEMBER. Thanks to Papa Roach and their fans, 300 people took a stand to fight hunger through a BroadCause campaign! The Nutopians joined the AAH&P family and helped spread the word about our work!
OCTOBER. We welcomed Carolyn Wonderland and her band as the newest AAH&P member as they performed at WhyHunger in New York City. Trampled by Turtles released a cover of The Pixies, “Where is My Mind,” donating the proceeds from all downloads to WhyHunger.
NOVEMBER. On 11/1/11, WhyHunger, Hard Rock International and Yoko Ono Lennon shared one voice to fight childhood hunger around the world by launching the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign.
DECEMBER. We celebrated the record breaking success of WhyHunger’s annual Hungerthon campaign, brining in over $800.000. We are grateful to the dozens of musicians and supporters who helped spread the word, donated items to our online auction with CharityBuzz or made a donation.
