Judy Collins Headlines Theatre Within’s 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute

November 30 at Symphony Space, NYC

Benefiting WhyHunger and its Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

All-Star Evening of Lennon Music Interpreted by Joan Osborne, Shelby Lynne,

Dar Williams, David Johansen, Rhett Miller and Many More

November 8, 2012 (New York, NY)  — Music legend Judy Collins, whose memorable version of In My Life remains one of the most loved Beatles’ covers ever, will top a stellar line-up at Theatre Within’s 32nd Annual John Lennon TributeFriday, November 30 at 8pm at Symphony Space in New York City.

The concert, produced in association with Music Without Borders, will bring together an acclaimed group of artists to celebrate John Lennon’s music, life and timeless message of peace, love and social activism.  Proceeds from the concert will be shared with WhyHunger  to support its long time partners in the Tri-State area that are on the front lines, providing food, water and critical services to their neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and working in their communities to continue the work of long-term recovery.

Performers include Joan Osborne and Shelby Lynne (Tribute veterans who tore down the house at the Beacon Theatre in 2010), folk favorites Dar Williams and Dan Bern, plus David Johansen (aka Buster Poindexter), Rich Pagano (of the Fab Faux), Rhett Miller, Toshi Reagon and the acclaimed Lennon interpreters, The Nutopians.  (Additional artist announcements are forthcoming).

Tickets for Theatre Within’s 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute are now available online at LennonTribute.org,  by phone at 212-864-5400 and at the Symphony Space Box Office, Tuesday – Sunday, 1pm – 6 pm.  Ticket prices are $165, $125 and $75. Use the discount code: IMAGINE  (case sensitive for online orders) for 25% off orchestra seats. Special VIP seating is available directly through Theatre Within by calling 212-560-2552.

“It’s beautiful that Theatre Within continues to honor John’s memory and have such a powerful and positive impact with its annual Tribute to him,” states Yoko Ono.

“I have been an ardent admirer of John Lennon’s music, and his role as a consciousness raiser, since he first emerged with the Beatles,” states Judy Collins, who will headline and perform for the first time at this much-anticipated annual event. “I have enjoyed interpreting many of his songs through the years on record and on stage. I am delighted to raise my voice to keep his memory and music alive and to support this most worthy effort, especially those in New York and New Jersey who have been hard hit by this terrible storm.”

Theatre Within is a not-for-profit committed to producing music and theatrical events that support important social causes. In recent years its Annual John Lennon Tribute has raised money to fund education programs for homeless children, build music schools in the Third World and support WhyHunger’s Imagine There’s No Hunger  campaign which has raised millions of dollars to feed the hungry around the world.

WhyHunger’s National Hunger Hotline 1-866-3-HUNGRY is now fielding calls from hundreds of families affected by Hurricane Sandy, connecting them with emergency food assistance, government programs, and support in their communities to ensure they get the resources they need for today and the long-term support to get back on their feet for tomorrow. WhyHunger’s partner Yorkville Common Pantry, in upper Manhattan, is bringing meals to those affected in the community, while continuing to provide meals and support services to more than 29,000 New Yorkers in need. Concert attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the concert for distribution to those hit by the storm.

“John still means a lot to people everywhere but he holds a special place in the heart of New York,” said Theatre Within’s Executive Director and Tribute creator Joe Raiola.  Mr. Raiola, whose “day job” is Senior Editor of  MAD Magazine, will be performing in the Tribute himself for the 32nd consecutive year.  “In the aftermath of this life-changing storm, we’re doing whatever we can to help our neighbors in need through WhyHunger, which is something we know John would have supported.”

“It is an honor to work with Theatre Within again this year on an event that embodies the spirit of John Lennon’s vision of a world at peace and free from hunger,” said Bill Ayres, WhyHunger’s co-founder and Executive Director. “The awareness and funds raised will help support sustainable agriculture trainings and programs for children and their families across the globe though the Imagine There’s No Hunger  campaign, as well as our local emergency efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.”

Music lovers can also support another worthy cause by purchasing a copy of the critically-acclaimed album, The 30th Annual John Lennon Tribute, Live from The Beacon Theater.  Released in November 2011, this stellar disc contains an all-star line-up of 15 performers, including Jackson Browne, Amy Mann, Taj Mahal, Shelby Lynne, Bettye LaVette and Patti Smith, interpreting Lennon classics at the group’s 2010 benefit concert in New York.  The digital download version is available for $9.99 at Amazon and iTunes; a Special Collector’s CD edition is available for a $35. Donation at LennonTribute.org.  Proceeds from the sales of digital downloads will go to the Japanese Red Cross and its Earthquake/Tsunami Relief efforts.
