Rage Against the Machine: Anti-Status Quo. Anti-Hunger.
Rage Against the Machine, known for their powerful music and uncompromising activism, turned their 2022 summer tour into a force for social change. By dedicating a portion of ticket sales to WhyHunger, the band channeled the energy of their fans into a powerful movement against hunger.
“When starting our 2022 tour, we knew that it was more important than ever to support bold and transformative work in the communities we visit,” said Rage Against the Machine lead guitarist, and long-term WhyHunger partner, Tom Morello. “After years of working with WhyHunger, I knew they were the perfect organization to partner with in our effort to give back this tour season. We hope these funds can help make a real impact on building a more just, hunger-free world.” - Tom Morello, WhyHunger Harry Chapin Award Honoree 2016
This impactful partnership resulted in over $1.3 million being distributed to eight local grassroots organizations across North America and Canada, including WhyHunger. These funds are directly empowering communities to address food insecurity on the ground, providing vital support for programs that address the root causes of hunger.
Furthermore, the band's collaboration with WhyHunger extends beyond financial support. Guitarist Tom Morello has become a powerful voice for WhyHunger, using his platform to raise awareness and inspire action. His authentic and passionate advocacy for our mission has been instrumental in amplifying our message and reaching new audiences.
“Hunger and poverty are not acts of God,” says Tom Morello. “They’re a crime in a world where there is so much wealth.”
“WhyHunger and their partners are tireless fighters for economic justice and human dignity. It is a great honor to stand in the company of these grassroots heroes whose sacrifice and courage continue to build a movement to put an end to the crime of global hunger,” said Tom Morello.
Food for Thought:
- Partnership - The Perfect Pairing: Rage Against the Machine, with Tom Morello's long-standing connection to WhyHunger, partnered with the organization for their 2022 tour with Run the Jewels. They implemented a "charity ticket" program, selling high-value tickets with proceeds benefiting WhyHunger and local partner organizations.
- Impact - The Main Course: The Madison Square Garden residency alone raised $1 million, distributed between the Immigrant Defense Project and WhyHunger's local partners, Neighbors Together and The Campaign Against Hunger. The total donation from the tour exceeded $1.3 million. This initiative not only generated significant funds but also raised awareness among fans and garnered media attention (e.g., Billboard coverage), amplifying the reach of WhyHunger and its partners.
- Key Takeaways - Savoring Success: Want to make a difference? Take notes. RATM's success proves: engage your fans directly, invest in local solutions, and watch change happen. This isn't just theory; it's a proven model for artists and organizations alike. Engage fans. Support local. Make a difference. This partnership shows how it's done.
