“The recognition of food as a human right is a fundamental outgrowth of the many lopsided equity issues we are seeking to correct. WhyHunger is not only leveling the global playing field but planting and growing healthy and sustainable systems of change. I am so honored to be a part of this movement,” said Zankel.

The appointment of Melissa Newhart and Jimmy Zankel to WhyHunger’s Board signifies the organization’s ongoing commitment to harnessing music’s transformative influence in promoting food justice and ending hunger. Since WhyHunger’s inception in 1975 by musician Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres, the organization has kept music in its DNA through initiatives like the Artists Against Hunger & Poverty program, the annual Hungerthon campaign and Amplified concert.

“With our newly appointed Board members, we are certain that WhyHunger stands at the threshold of extraordinary growth and increased impact across the U.S. and in 23 countries around the globe toward our mission to ensure the right to nutritious food for all. We’re eager to collaborate with Melissa and Jimmy in advancing the human right to food for all,” said Cindy Secunda, Chair of WhyHunger’s Board.
