About the School

The Latin American Institute of Agroecology IALA Ixim Ulew, (its name is in the Mayan language K’iche’ and means Land of Corn in Spanish), is an academic institution accredited by the authorities of the Tecnológico Nacional-INATEC in Nicaragua. It is directed to develop Technical Education programs focused on the Agricultural and Forestry Sector. The goal of many of the IALA’s is to become accredited in their countries.

This IALA is a key part of the network of Agroecology Schools in Latin America promoted by the  Coordinadora  Latinoamericana de Organizaciones del Campo CLOC/La Via Campesina (Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations CLOC/La Via Campesina). They have students come from all over Latin America and the Caribbean to study at their school.

Through their programming, young people are:

  • Trained in political and technical studies in agroecology.
  • Producing agricultural plots to get hands-on experience during growing seasons.
