“To know is to care, to care is to act, to act is to make a difference.”
– Harry Chapin

Hunger is solvable and nutritious food is a basic human right.

WhyHunger was founded in 1975 by the late musician Harry Chapin and Radio DJ Bill Ayres to provide critical resources to support grassroots movements and fuel community solutions to hunger rooted in social, environmental, racial and economic justice.

For more than 46 years, WhyHunger has been building a broad-based social movement led by the grassroots to change the systems, policies and institutions that perpetuate hunger and poverty in our world. COVID-19 has only exacerbated the social injustices that have long existed at the root of hunger, from racism to the lack of a living wage. That’s why it so important to support solutions to hunger that tackle the root causes and to advocate for policies that advance the human right to nutritious food for all.
